Train reliability improves compared to beginning of year in Latvia

The passenger train operator Vivi has received around 100 compensation claims from citizens for delayed or canceled train services between April and mid-July. Most of them were for situations beyond the company's control, but for the rest of the cases, passengers were paid a total of around EUR 800, the company told Latvian Radio August 7.

The possibility of receiving compensation for delayed or canceled trips was introduced by Vivi at the beginning of this year when there were significant problems with the new electric trains. The situation has improved considerably recently, says Edgars Butāns, the company's spokesman.

"We have covered more than one million kilometers with our new electric trains carrying passengers, so it is not unusual for a small technical problem to occur once in a while with this amount of kilometers. However, all these problems are promptly rectified during regular maintenance. All in all, I would say the situation is very, very stable," says Butāns.

Problems with train services are less frequent than they were at the beginning of the year.

Over the last few months, train punctuality has averaged 98%. In July, however, the statistics will worsen, as more than 400 journeys had to be canceled due to the severe storm, according to Vivi.
