Rail Baltica gets another EUR 1.2 billion from EC

An additional €1.2 billion of EU funding will be allocated for the implementation and construction of the Rail Baltica project, of which €346 million will be allocated specifically for Latvia, the project implementers RB Rail said July 17.

Together with national co-financing from the three Baltic States, the available funding will total up to €1.5 billion.

Of the additional funding, Latvia will receive around €346 million, Estonia around €370 million, and Lithuania around €458 million to implement Rail Baltica activities.

In Latvia, this funding will be used for the implementation of priority activities - the construction of a 27 km main route Misa-Latvia-Lithuanian border. Co-financing will also be provided for the relocation of the natural gas pipeline between Vangaži and Misa, the construction of the Iecava high voltage connection point, and the Skulte construction site, which will serve as the construction logistics base for the northern section of the Latvian main route towards Estonia.

According to the cost-benefit analysis, the economic benefits of Rail Baltica - both direct and indirect - are expected to outweigh the costs, reaching a total of €48 billion in the Baltic States. The first phase of the project, which aims to build the Rail Baltica high-speed rail line in all three Baltic countries, linking with Poland, by 2030, is estimated to cost €15.3 billion.

Around 15% of the Rail Baltica main line across the Baltics is expected to be built in 2024.
