Head of Latvian public media supervisor reappointed

The current head of the Council, Jānis Siksnis, has been unanimously elected as the Chairman of the Council of the Public Electronic Media (SEPLP) for the next term until August 3 of next year, the Council said August 1.

This decision was taken at the SEPLP meeting on August 1 based on the Law on Public Electronic Media and their Management, which stipulates that SEPLP elects its chairperson from among its members for a one-year term.

"The Council is facing a very intensive phase of work on the creation of a single Latvian Public Service Media, which has reached the finishing line. Together with the media representatives, all the preparatory works have to be completed by the end of this year in order to jointly launch a new era in the history of public service media in January 2025," Siksnis said.

"The Council will continue to play an active role in ensuring that the resources of Latvian Radio and Latvian Television are effectively combined into one company, creating a stronger public service media company in the long term for the development of quality and modern content," he said.

The Saeima elected the first SEPLP on August 4, 2021, confirming the Supervisory Board members Jānis Siksnis, Sanita Upleja-Jegermane and Jānis Eglītis.

SEPLP is an independent institution that exercises the functions of a public media shareholder and supreme decision-making body, guarantees the editorial independence of the public media, develops and approves public service orders, and monitors the use of financial resources of Latvian Radio and Latvian Television.
