Court rejects suspended lecturer's claim against music academy

The court has dismissed a lawsuit filed by Rolands Kronlaks, the former head of the Music Technology Department at the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music (JVLMA), against the JVLMA, Latvian Radio reports August 1. He had challenged his suspension, claiming that it was unlawful.

Kronlaks was one of the lecturers whose name was brought to the fore in the JVLMA sexual harassment and emotional abuse scandal. An anonymous student confirmed that the lecturer had been in contact with her for several years, and snippets of correspondence between the two in 2019 were also made public. Kronlaks was given a disciplinary sanction by the Ethics Committee in February. A month later, he was suspended.

In his view, the suspension was unlawful, as he had already received a penalty for inappropriate communication with female students.

On April 19, Kronlaks brought an action against the JVLMA seeking annulment of the suspension order and the recovery of his average earnings for forced absenteeism. The compensation sought by Kronlak was EUR 8,000.

On Thursday, August 1, the Riga City Court decided to dismiss Kronlaks' claim. The ruling can be appealed against within 20 days.

Kronlaks told Latvian Television that he would consult a lawyer and assess whether to appeal.
