Large-scale tax evasion detected in freight transport company in Latvia

In August, the Tax and Customs Police Administration of the State Revenue Service (VID) sent to the Prosecutor's Office a criminal case against three persons for the payment of so-called "envelope wages", or unregistered cash payments amounting to more than one million euros, in a freight transport company.

At the initial stage of the pre-trial investigation in March 2023, procedural actions were carried out, including searches of objects related to the economic activity of the company, during which various items of evidence were seized, including cash intended for the payment of "envelope wages".

During the subsequent pre-trial investigation, it was established that the company paid €1.2 million in unrecorded wages to employees between August 2019 and March 2023 and evaded almost €1 million in taxes.

As part of the criminal proceedings, proceedings have been initiated to impose coercive measures on the legal entity, as well as to resolve property issues, seizing more than half a million euros of immovable property.

The criminal proceedings have been referred for prosecution based on Article 217.1 and Article 218(2) of the Criminal Law - breach of the rules on wages and tax evasion.
