Latvia extends enhanced border security mode

The Cabinet of Ministers meeting on Tuesday, September 10, decided to extend the enhanced border security regime at the Latvian-Belarusian border.

The enhanced border security regime is in place from March 13 to December 31 this year. Previously, it was set until September 12.

The Ministry of the Interior explains in the annotation of the order that in March this year, 695 persons were deterred from illegally crossing the state border, 820 in April, 543 in May, 432 in June, 1,043 in July, and 300 until August 18.

A total of 4,210 persons have been deterred from crossing the state border illegally between January 1 and September 10 this year.

In order to prevent persons from entering the country illegally, immediate action is needed. By extending the reinforced border protection regime, Latvia ensures the inviolability of the state border and prevents threats to the state, the Ministry said.
