Nearly 3,000 pupils have declined to learn Russian at school in Latvia

2,838 pupils in grades 4 to 9 have opted out of learning Russian as a second foreign language, according to data compiled by the Ministry of Education and Science (IZM) published July 17.

The highest number of applications for rejecting Russian was received in Riga - 390. More than 100 applications were also received in Valmiera, Ogre, Liepāja, Ķekava, Mārupe, Jelgava, Bauska, and Saldus.

The largest number of pupils who refused to learn Russian was in Year 7 - 717 pupils.

After such a refusal, but no later than the start of the next school year, the founder of the educational institution must, in cooperation with the school, provide the pupil with the opportunity to learn another foreign language. Schools may conclude mutual agreements on the implementation of a second foreign language or parts thereof in the primary education curriculum at the stage of grades 4-9.

Pupils who graduate from Year 9 this year and have opted out of Russian as a second foreign language will receive a grade in this subject based on the previous years' cumulative grade.
