Latvian emergency team holds large-scale exercises

Last weekend, the 15th-anniversary event of the State Emergency Medical Service (NMPD) "NMPD Power" took place in Līgatne, during which a large-scale exercise was held to train and strengthen the readiness of the team for various emergencies and events, the service said in a press release on July 31.

It was the largest and most challenging exercise organized by the Service itself for the first time, with the involvement of cooperation partners.

The exercise scenario involved two different incidents at the same time with a total of 86 casualties.

In the first incident of the drill scenario, 60 people had gathered for an outdoor celebration. During the celebration, an aerial shell from the Second World War exploded while a bonfire was being lit, resulting in burns, amputated body parts, lacerations, and fractures, with many victims unconscious. According to the scenario, people panic after the explosion and make it difficult for medics to work at the scene, as often happens in real life.

The training scenario foresaw that soon after the first incident, another incident took place in another location with dozens of victims: a fight broke out in a guest house during a party, leaving the victims with gunshot and stab wounds.

In total, 13 medical teams from across Latvia improved their skills. The exercise also involved the NMPD Operational Control Centre.

Almost 150 NMPD staff participated in the training. The training was organized by the NMPD together with partners from the State Fire and Rescue Service, the State Police, and the Medical Education and Technology Centre of Riga Stradiņš University.
