Central square in Rīga temporarily closed due to dangerous cathedral roof

Rīga City Council said Monday morning that the central Dome Square (Doma laukums) in the Latvian capital has been temporarily closed due to the danger posed by a section of roof on the cathedral which adjoins the open public space.

Video posted online by deputy mayor Edvards Ratnieks showed a large section of roof wobbling unnervingly in strong winds, posing a potential danger to pedestrians if it should become detached.

Elsewhere in the capital, municipal transport company Rīgas Satiksme said its routes through the Biķernieki forest had been closed by the State Fire And Rescue Service (VUGD) due to the danger posed by falling trees. The VUGD in turn repeated its call for people to stay at home if at all possible as strong winds and heavy rain are expected to continue for several more hours.
