Latvia's annual school excellence ratings show some shifts

Daugavpils Technology Lyceum, Riga Technical University (RTU) Engineering Secondary School and Riga State Gymnasium No.1 retain their leading positions in the ranking of schools compiled by the Atis Kronvalds Foundation, according to information published by LETA on August 7.

The ranking of schools for the 2023/2024 school year includes 37 grammar schools, 67 large schools with at least 100 highschoolers, and 125 small schools with fewer than 100 highschoolers or no highschoolers.

This ranking takes into account pupils' achievements in national olympiads, open olympiads, and pupils' scientific research competitions, so the work of the most talented and hard-working pupils, not overall marks.

DaugavpilsTechnology Lyceum has retained its first position with 40.28 points in the large schools group. Riga French Lyceum came second in this group with 33.45 points, while Riga Secondary School No 64 came third with 19.06 points. Last year, the two schools ranked 16th and 15th respectively.

Riga Teika Secondary School came fourth, while the East Latvian Secondary School of Technology came fifth. The school was not ranked last year, but two years ago it was ranked fourth in the group of small schools.

RTU School of Engineering has retained its first place in the small schools group with 85.81 points. Liepāja Oskars Kalpaka Secondary School came second with 21.74 points, and Āgenskalns Primary School came third with 15.65 points. Both schools were not included in last year's ranking. Premjers International School and Riga International School, which ranked fourth and fifth this year, are also newcomers to the ranking.

Riga State Gymnasium No.1 ranked first in the ranking of state gymnasiums with 200.32 points, while Āgenskalns State Gymnasium moved from third to second place with 96.23 points. Riga State Gymnasium No.2 with 85.82 points dropped from second to third place.

Daugavpils State Gymnasium moved up from eighth place to fourth place, while Riga State German Gymnasium held on to fifth place.

There is still a significant difference in the scores between the top-ranked schools and the others, according to the rankings.

The large schools group includes 68 educational institutions, the majority of which, 66, scored below 20 points. 15 schools scored below one point.

In the small schools group, almost all schools, 114 out of a total of 116, scored below 20 points. 61 educational institutions scored below one point.

In the group of state gymnasiyms, 14 out of a total of 34 schools scored below ten points. Four of them scored below one point.
