Swimming not recommended in Rīga, Jūrmala

The Health Inspectorate has imposed bathing restrictions at most of the official bathing sites in Jūrmala and Rīga because the microbiological quality of the water does not meet the requirements, the inspectorate said August 2.

Swimming is banned in the Rīga bathing sites in Rumbula and Ķīpsala, as well as in the Sigulda bathing site "Gauja". The inspectorate has also maintained its advice not to swim in Lucavsala, Lucavsala Bay, Vecāķi, Daugavgrīva and Vakarbuļļi.

In Jūrmala, however, the bathing areas of Vaivari, Asari, Melluži, Kauguri, and Pumpuri have been banned because, according to the information provided by the municipality, the stormwater outlets on the coast of the Gulf of Riga in Jūrmala are currently also receiving water from previously flooded areas.

It is advised not to swim in the bathing areas of the Lielupe River in Ezeru Street and Priedaine, as in some places additional rainwater from possibly polluted areas has entered the Lielupe River.

The Inspectorate also advises against bathing at the Salaspils town bathing site and the Saldus Lake bathing site.

Swimming is allowed in the official bathing areas of Kurzeme and Latgale. The microbiological parameters of the bathing water at 14 more official bathing sites will be known at the beginning of next week.

The next laboratory tests will be carried out on August 26 and 27 at all official bathing sites.
