Ostapenko and Kichenok earn US Open doubles win

Latvia's top tennis player, Aļona Ostapenko, and her Ukrainian partner Lyudmyla Kichenok, won the women's doubles final of the US Open Championship in New York on Friday, claiming their first ever Grand Slam title as a pair.

Ostapenko and Kichenok defeated the duo of French tennis player Kristina Mladenovic and China's Shuai Zhang in two sets with a score of 6-4, 6-3.

It is Ostapenko's second Grand Slam title ollowing her sensational French Open win in 2017.

By winning the final, Ostapenko and Kichenoka earned $750,000 in prize money. 

Ostapenko said after her win on live television that both she and Kichenok had been improving throughout the tournament.

"We are a really great team and I think it was just an amazing two weeks," said the Latvian ace after the victory. "We didn't expect anything, we were just playing better and better every match, we didn't lose one set, so it was a really good tournament."
