Latvian Security Service head reappointed for another term

On Tuesday, July 16, the government confirmed Normunds Mežviets as the Head of the State Security Service (VDD) for a third term, the Ministry of the Interior said.

According to Interior Minister Rihards Kozlovskis (New Unity), Mežviets has so far led the VDD professionally and confidently, which is why the Minister had no doubts about Mežviets' nomination for confirmation for the next term.

Mežviets has been the head of the VDD since 2014. He started working for the VDD almost 20 years ago.

In recent years, in response to Russia's war in Ukraine and other security challenges, the service under the leadership of Mežviets has significantly expanded its activities and the results of the service's activities have been good, the ministry said.

Mežviets was appointed head of the VDD (then the Security Police) by a government decision on October 28, 2014. His mandate was extended by the government for another five years in 2019.

He worked in the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of Education and Science, and the State Chancellery in the early 2000s. He studied at the University of Latvia, where he obtained a Master's degree in Political Science and a Master's degree in History.
